Dr. Rachel Won

Keynote Speaker

Chief Editor

Dr. Rachel Won is the Chief Editor of Nature Reviews Electrical Engineering. She joined the journal in July 2025 after almost two decades at Nature Photonics, where she was one of the journal’s founding editors in 2006. She later served as Chief Editor from 2011 to 2014 and subsequently as International Editor.

Won has a strong scientific background in optics and photonics. She received her Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science from the National University of Malaysia and her Master’s degree in Mechanical and Production Engineering from Nanyang Technological University in Singapore, where she worked on optical fibre sensing. She later completed her PhD at Aston University in the UK, focusing on microwave photonics and nonlinear optics. Before moving into scientific publishing, she also worked as an optics engineer at Philips Electronics Singapore and as a Medici Fellow at Aston University, supporting the commercialization of university research.

Throughout her editorial career, Won has remained closely connected to the international optics and photonics community. Her work spans scientific publishing, research communication and engagement with developments across fields such as integrated optics, silicon photonics and quantum technologies. She is a Fellow of both Optica and SPIE. In particular, Optica recognized her for her leadership in scientific publishing and her extensive volunteer work promoting photonics and the role of women in science.
