International Workshop on Career Opportunities

The international workshop “Women in Photonics” brings together outstanding female scientists at the beginning of their careers and offers them the opportunity to connect, present their research, and exchange ideas with leading experts from academia and industry.

The focus of the workshop will be on:

  • Optical health technologies – diagnosis, monitoring, therapy
  • Biomedical microscopy, bio-analytical methods, medical chip systems
  • Biophotonics such as vibrational spectroscopy, fluorescence, OCT, PAT, etc.
  • Laser based technology
  • Photonic data science (AI, deep learning, machine learning)
  • Optical engineering
  • Fiber optics/fiber technology

The workshop is aimed at female postdocs and PhD students working in these research areas who would like to present their work, expand their professional networks, and exchange ideas with other researchers. Participants will have the opportunity to engage with experienced scientists from academia and industry, gain new perspectives, and develop strategies for their future professional careers.

Photonics is a very highly multidisciplinary field where we have scientists from different backgrounds. We need to speak one language. And additionally, we are all women, we have very similar problems in research, in family, in personal lives, and that’s a very good opportunity to learn from each other, to help each other and build our network.

Humboldt University Berlin, Professor of Optical Spectroscopy at Interfaces at “Women in Photonics 2025”

Registration & Abstract Submission

To register for the workshop, an online registration portal will open in late 2026, during which you can apply for a travel grant.

Please note that applicants for a travel grant are required to give a short presentation as part of the program. During registration, you will be asked to submit a short abstract and a brief resume. A template for the abstract is linked below; there are no specific formatting requirements for the resume—one page is sufficient.

To register for the workshop, please complete the online registration form linked below. Participation in the workshop is free of charge.
If you would like to apply for a travel grant, please indicate this accordingly in the registration form.

Required attachments:

  • Abstract of maximum one page length (there is no template)
  • Short bio of maximum one page length

The registration and abstract submission deadline is March 7, 2027. Following the deadline, submissions will be reviewed. Notifications of acceptance will be sent in April 2027.

Travel Grants

A limited number of travel grants is available. Travel grant recipients will be selected as part of the review process following the registration deadline. Applicants for a travel grant are expected to give an oral presentation as part of the workshop programme.

The workshop will provide an outstanding opportunity for female postdocs and PhD students to share their research plans and results, as well as to network with senior female scientists.  This meeting is an opportunity to ask questions, learn presentation skills, discover career paths in optics, and have fun.

Exhibitors & Supporters

During the workshop, companies and institutions will have the opportunity to present their organizations to the young researchers in form of an  info point. These will be located in the foyer of the Leibniz IPHT, the area where breaks will take place and where the poster exhibition will be held.
In addition, the program will include a session dedicated to presenting career options in academia, research and industry. Each supporter of the workshop will have the opportunity to highlight the opportunities available at their own institution.

Conference Organizer and Venue

Leibniz Institut of Photonic Technology

At the Leibniz Institute of Photonic Technology (Leibniz IPHT) in Jena, scientists use light to find solutions to questions and urgent problems in the fields of health, environment, medicine and safety. Under the motto “Photonics for Life”, they research light-based technologies that make our lives safer, healthier and cleaner. Especially in the field of optical health technologies, Leibniz IPHT, in cooperation with partners from research and industry, is specifically promoting translation: the transfer of research results into applicable solutions – from Ideas to Instruments.
